Boxun reports that on Sunday July 26, 2009 it was announced that the two sacred “sister temples” Jokhang and Ramoche, the most sacred temples in Lhasa, would undergo renovation. This news has disturbed not just Lhasa but all of the Tibetan plateau. The general sentiment is that if cultural relics are stolen, or if the real is replaced by the fake, there will be an uprising.

The Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet has undergone renovation numerous times. In the 1980s and 90s, when it was undergoing “protective refurbishment,” many cultural relics went missing including figures and images of the Buddha, Thangkas, gold, silver, pearls and other treasures. Until today it is not clear what became of them. What people see in the Potala today are all replacements.
