Falungong began during the late 1970s Qigong craze. Qigong is a health maintenance exercise practiced in Chinese medicine. It includes tuna (explosive breathing), Daoist breathing exercises, xingqi (promotion of the circulation of qi), fuqi (Taoist breath control), liandan (strengthening one’s dantian), xiudao (cultivating Tao), zazen (sitting in meditation) etc.

China’s economic reform and opening brought with it thought reform. Qigong became popular at this time. According to statistics, at its height there were more than 2,000 types of qigong and more than 100 million people practiced it. Adding in all the national and regional variations and groups would be too many to count. Included among its practitioners is famous rocket scientist Qian Xuesen. This illustrates the saying that qigong strengthens the body and spirit.

Falungong rose during the qigong craze, but different from the other groups it inspired religions devotion. Its adherents believe in the Great Wheel of Law, its goal is to improve one’s behavior and thereby improve one’s spiritual life.
