300 Dongguan villagers protested against government’s waste incineration plants project

The government of Shenzhen Longhua New district announced the construction plan of waste incineration plants near Shenzhen-Dongguan junction days ago, causing several protests.

On July 9, more than 300 villagers from Dongguan were intercepted by police on the highway, which caused traffic gridlock and a confrontation between large number of villagers and police followed.

Radio Free Asia reported that local government plans to build a construction which can be used for landfill and incineration, Shenzhen, Dongguan and neighboring residents strongly opposed this project and launched a number of protests.

Shenzhen authorities held talks on environmental protection on July 9, trying to persuade people to accept the project but led to dissatisfaction among villagers. More than 300 villagers planed to protest but were intercepted by the police on the high way.

The villagers were blocked by the police for about two hours, during which they were not allowed to leave, their belongings were also confiscated. Sources said a dozen people were arrested, at least 3 people were detained on 11th.

Local government later issued a statement claiming the immediate cessation of the project. The statement also said it won’t re-start the construction without thorough evaluation.

According to a duty officer from Shenzhen municipal government office, decision of construction plan was made ​​on the level of government, the villager’s disapproval has no practical effect.

“The authorities are currently on deleting related  posts online and shielding network signal to blocked relevant information”, said some villagers.
