Police attack thousands of striking workers

On Monday, April 4, 2016 police attacked thousands of Tuopai Shede Group workers in Shehong County, Suining City, Sichuan Province who were on strike. Many workers were injured and dozens were arrested.

Recently Tianyang Group acquired Tuopai Group. Immediately worker compensation arguments and other issues emerged. Thousands of workers began striking on Wednesday, March 30, 2016.

On the morning of April 4, the local government mobilized more than 1,000 police to enter the Tuopai Group worksite in Tuopai Township to evict the striking workers. More than a dozen police beat up a worker nicknamed Monkey, then arrested him and his wife. Their whereabouts are still unknown. They also smashed an old man’s head. He was bleeding profusely when he was taken away.

Another netizen “Little Sister Wen Jia” said: “I know many who were arrested. Many more were arrested who I don’t know. If the total wasn’t 100, then it was 70 or 80.”

According to netizens, this afternoon the workers went to the township to demand the release of the prisoners, but were not successful. At the same time Tuopai Group threatened the workers, saying that if they didn’t return to work on Tuesday, April 5, they would be fired.

Tuopai Group LLC is located in Tuopai Township, Shehong County. It’s a large state-owned enterprise, occupying an area of ​​5.6 square kilometers and annually producing 300,000 tons of grain alcohol. It employs 7,000 workers. In November 2015, the Tianyang Group signed an equity transfer and capitalization increase agreement with the Shehong county government. The Tianyang Group assumed a 70% ownership stake in the Tuopai Group. Tuopai Group President Zhou Zheng replaced the Shehong county government as controlling owner of the Tuopai Group.
