(BOXUN) On Tuesday December 15, 2015, in Yunluo Township, Puning City, Guangdong Province, thousands of villagers demonstrated in protest against the government’s forcible construction of a large-scale waste incineration power plant. They damaged some of the facilities under construction.

According to villagers, the Shishikeng Village, Yunluo Township, Puning City waste disposal power plant has not yet received the villagers’ approval. Since 2013, the villagers have demonstrated many times, but the local government has decided to go ahead with construction soon.

The villagers said that if the project is completed, both Yunluo Township and the whole Yun Mountain region will suffer large-scale environmental degradation. The local groundwater, soil, air will all be polluted, and give rise to illnesses among the Yunluo villagers and may even lead to a surge of congenital defects and cancer in the future.

A villager said online that the municipal government’s forced construction of the waste disposal power plant is inappropriately sited, hasn’t gotten the proper permits, and hasn’t received the approval of the villagers. This is what’s given rise to more than 10,000 people protesting against it, and some schools closing.

Photographs and video from the protests show a large number of villagers and students carrying national flags marching to the construction site. A large number of police blocked their way. The protesters attacked and damaged some of the power plant facilities.

A villager said online: The construction of the Yunluo waste disposal power plant is a mortal threat to all us Puning City residents. As Puning citizens, we must take a stand and risk our lives to resist this. We can’t let the government build this deadly poisonous gas plant in our hometown.
