[Bowen News Service Exclusive] On the afternoon of Saturday September 26, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his first state visit to the United States, then traveled to New York to attend the United Nations’ 70th anniversary activities. There are many back stories to Xi’s visit, one of them being that Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan’s daughter Xi Mingze was a member of their delegation, and was listed as an interpreter. Because she used a pseudonym, and stayed very low-key, even few members of the Chinese delegation were aware of her presence.

A member of Xi’s delegation told this news service that China’s Foreign Ministry Translation Office translated the name list and used a pseudonym for Xi’s daughter. Xi Mingze attended high school at the Zhejiang Foreign Languages School. This school has produced many talented translators for China’s Foreign Ministry. Xi Mingze attended Zhejiang University’s School of Foreign Languages and majored in English translation. After a year she transferred to Harvard University in the United States. After her father became Communist Party General Secretary, she returned to China in 2014.

According to sources, Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan have prepared their daughter to be an English-language interpreter since the beginning of high school. Her English-language ability is good enough for her to work in the Foreign Ministry Translation Office. But it’s not known if she’s presently a formal staff member or not. This isn’t the first time she’s accompanied her parents on a work trip, and one time her presence was disclosed. Earlier this year she accompanied her mother and father to Lijiahe Village in Yan’an County, Shaanxi Province, the village her father was sent down to during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). They took a family photo, and even though a bodyguard tried to screen her and not let anyone else take a photo, someone did and posted it on the Internet.

According to sources, Xi Jinping’s daughter is the apple of her father’s eye. He hesitated about whether to bring his daughter on this trip, but finally the Director of the General Office of the Communist Party Li Zhanshu made the arrangements and treated it as highly confidential. Only a few members of Xi’s delegation knew that his daughter was part of the group. Since Xi Mingze has frequently accompanied her parents on trips, this can be described as her most important “assignment” since she graduated from Harvard University. But since she had to remain unrecognized, and because of the special arrangements made by the Director of the General Office, those who knew about her presence had to remain tight-lipped.
