(BOXUN) China’s State Internet Information Office on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 announced that due to “alleged cyber-extortion and paid deleted posts,” a total of nearly 300 websites and over 1.15 million social networking accounts were officially closed.

In January 2015, the State Internet Information Office, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and four other departments jointly launched an unprecedentedly severe rectification action against “cyber-extortion and paid deleted posts.” This action has now been officially completed.

The State Internet Information Office said, in addition to close illegal websites and social networking accounts, this special clean-up campaign removed more than 900 million illegal and unhealthy pieces of information, arranged review interviews with “China Economic Net,” “China Youth Network” and 136 other websites, and deploy Baidu, 360 and other key business websites to clean up and shield search keywords and 9,737 related terms, and more than 300 million relevant links.
