On Saturday, July 11, 2015, a campaign began on the White House petition website urging the U.S. government to cancel Chinese President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the U.S. to protest the recent detention and disappearance of dozens of Chinese human rights lawyers. If the petition gets more than 100,000 signatures, it must be reviewed and receive an official response.
The petition said that starting Friday July 10, 2015 more than 60 Chinese human rights lawyers have been forcibly detained or “disappeared” by the police. It calls on Obama and the U.S. government to pay close attention to China’s recent crackdown and get involved. Measures could include cancelling Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned September visit to D.C. and temporarily suspending all other official exchange activities with the Chinese government.
