Beijing Big Sweep: At least 20 human rights lawyers detained or disappeared

(Boxun report, Friday July 10, 2015)—After Beijing Fengrui Law Firm attorneys Zhou Shifeng, Wang Yu and five others were abducted or could not be contacted, at least 20 Beijing lawyers, paralegals, and law firm staff members were taken away or disappeared.

As of 2 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, confirmed as detained lawyers, paralegals, and law firm staff members include: Wang Yu, Bao Zhuoxuan, Zhou Shifeng, Liu Sixin, Li Shuyun, Wang Fang, Ge Ping, Li Heping, Zhao Wei, Li Weida, Tan Yongpei, Sui Muqing, Wang Haijun, Wang Cheng. In addition to these Lin Bin (a Wang Yun monk), Liu Yongping (online name Lao Mu) and others have been detained.

Many other lawyers and those connected to them have disappeared or been put under state control: Zhang Weiyu, Zhou Qing (Fengrui Law Firm driver), Wang Quanzhang, Huang Liqun, Liu Xiaoyuan, Shanghai’s Qin Lei, Bao Longjun (Wang Yu’s husband, citizen representative) and others. Renowned Beijing dissident Hu Shigen can’t be contacted, and it’s suspected his freedom is being restricted.

(Boxun)Director of Beijing Fengrui Law Firm attorney Zhou Shifeng today (Friday July 10, 2015) was abducted and cannot be contacted. After attorney Wang Yu, this is the second Fengrui Law Firm attorney to be abducted. Fengrui Law Firm has at least three other employees who cannot be contacted.

According to attorney Liu Xiaoyuan: “This morning, attorney Zhou Shifeng was forcibly taken away by three people in the Seven Days Hotel in the Beijing suburban artists’ colony of Songzhuang.” A little while later, attorney Liu Xiaoyuan reported on Twitter that many Ruifeng Law firm employees had disappeared. At 8:45 a.m., administrative assistant Dr. Liu Sixin called me from his home. He hadn’t said more than a few words when suddenly he said ‘They’re coming, they’re coming.’ Then the phone cut off and he couldn’t be recontacted. Law firm cashier Little Wang left his home at 8:25 a.m. to go to the office, he also can’t be contacted. And this morning attorney Li Shuyun was at home. She said on Weibo that someone knocked on her door, but she was afraid and didn’t open it. She also cannot be contacted.”

Mr. Wu Gan (online name Super Vulgar Butcher), who was criminally detained and then formally arrested in May this year, was a Ruifeng Law Firm employee. Wang Yu was Mr. Wu Gan’s attorney.

@tengbiao: In the past three days many rights defense attorneys have been abducted, detained and disappeared. The situation is much more severe than the 2011 crackdown on the Jasmine protest movement. Wang Yu, Bao Longjun, Zhou Sifeng have all been abducted. Li Heping was taken away. Wang Quanzhang, Huang Liqun, Jiang Tianyong, Liu Sixin, Li Zhiyun and others have all disappeared. Please pay close attention to China’s human rights lawyers who remain indomitable in the face of this persecution.
