New York area commemorates the 26th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre with a series of events. The size and number of memorial activities is increasing rather than decreasing, showing that the massacre remains a critical issue in Chinese politics.

This year’s New York commemoration has two special characteristics: 1. Calls for revolution are growing louder; and 2. More and more young people show interest in and concern about the Tiananmen Massacre.

Democracy activist Wang Juntao said that the past 10 years have demonstrated clearly that the system of protecting legal rights in China has failed. “Reflection has revealed a clear conclusion: China’s problems can’t be resolved as long as the Communist Party remains in power.”

This year’s massacre commemoration reveals that young people are concerned about historical truth. The People’s Daily-affiliated “Global Times” published an editorial harshly criticizing the open letter by Chinese exchange students in the US calling for open debate of the Tiananmen massacre in China. This has had the unanticipated result of an increasing number of young people becoming interested in the massacre.
