Weiyuan County, Sichuan Province: Starting on Friday, April 10, 2015, the whole of Weiyuan County town was suffused by a cloud of poisonous gas. Many people had already exhibited symptoms ofa  red rash, vomiting, fainting and other signs of being poisoned. Netizens have said that the stench was coming from the coking plant’s oil exhaust, but the local government said it’s natural air condensation. On Monday, April 13, thousands of citizens who could no longer stand the stench demonstrated until that evening.

On Tuesday, April 14, the number of demonstrators escalated. More than 10,000 people protested. One thousand Weiyuan High School students who were seriously affected by the gas began a school strike. The same day, officials sent representatives to the streets to distribute leaflets stating that no poison gas had escaped.

Around 11 a.m., Weiyuan High School students clashed with a large number of police. Many students were beaten, hospitalized and detained. Police vehicles in front of the school gates were overturned by the angry crowd.

Demonstrations are currently continuing. Many eyewitnesses have uploaded photos to the Internet. Some netizens have confirmed that the local web has been shut down.(BOXUN)
