Boxun’s correspondent learned that on the afternoon of Thursday March 19, 2015 attorney Zhang Lei met with his client Guo Feixiong in Guangzhou’s Tianhe District Detention Center. Zhang Lei issued a message saying: “We exchanged views on recent major events at home and abroad, and Guo’s analysis and views greatly enlightened me. Also his steadfast belief that China will achieve democracy deeply inspired me.”

Guo Feixiong’s real name is Yang Maodong and he’s a pioneer of China’s democratic rights movement. Because of his long-term efforts to promote democracy, he’s been repeatedly imprisoned and suffered extensive torture.

Guo Feixiong is detained in Guangzhou’s Tianhe Detention Center. The jail’s food hygiene conditions are very poor. From August 8, 2013 until now he hasn’t been allowed outside. His cell is only 30 square meters and houses more than 30 people. Each person has less than one square meter of space. During the time of his incarceration, Guo Feixiong has been on hunger strike for more than 70 days. But his situation has not improved. He has been deprived of the right to meet with his legal counsel for several months. Books, letters, and medication have all been confiscated. He’s only supplied a half bucket of water to wash with. He must share soap. Because of lack of food he’s emaciated and haggard. When he appeared in court the bailiffs shackled and injured him. Because his lower limbs have no strength he requested medical treatment but was denied it. The next time he appeared in court he was interrogated for 19 hours. He got so hungry he almost passed out. When his defense attorney went to the bathroom he was followed and videotaped.
