Boxun’s correspondent has learned that on Sunday March 8, 2015 netizens initiated a series of street protests against pollution: “Return my blue sky, protect future generations—International Women’s Day surgical mask rally.” On the afternoon of Sunday March 8, 2015, netizens in Xi’an and Luoyang responded to the appeal and took to the streets to protest pollution. They held banners saying: “Carcinogenic pollution harms us all” and “The government has a responsibility to resolve pollution.”

After the protests in Xi’an, at 4 in the afternoon, Xi’an netizen Zhang Hui went missing. It’s likely he was detained by the police. This would make him the first person detained because of the pollution protests.

Xi’an netizen “Sleepless” issued a statement to protest participants: “If you don’t recover his freedom as soon as possible, tomorrow at 9 a.m. I will go to government headquarters and place protest placards there. Then I will walk to the clock tower with placards to protest.”

Regarding the Sunday March 8, 2015 protest, the Chinese authorities have adopted many measures to monitor and control them. Renowned human rights activist Hu Jia sent a message saying: “Today, Beijing Public Security Bureau Network Supervisor Corps and the State Security Corps fully engaged in monitoring and controlling all pollution protests.”
