Boxun once revealed that Guo Wengui of Zheng Quan Securities fled China after learning he was under investigation. Guo came to the U.S. at the end of 2014 and then went to the United Kingdom.

One week before Boxun suffered a major hack attack on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, it had received a secret message saying that Ho Wan Kwak, a Hong Kong businessman, had since 2012 been trying to hire American companies to attack Boxun and conduct surveillance of the homes of persons in charge of Boxun. The message warned that Kwak was arranging a new round of attacks on Boxun and another mainland  website known as guba.com.cn.

Guo Wengui’s name in Hong Kong is Guo Haowen, which is Ho Wan Kwak in Cantonese.

In early January 2015, Yong Yu, one of Guo Wengui’s assistants, came to New York, apparently to arrange surveillance. On the list of names were family members of Ling Jihua, the vice chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who is being investigated for corruption. Those names included Ling Wancheng, his daughter, and Ping Li, his wife.

Guo Wengui helped expose Ling Jihua’s misdeeds, hastening Ling’s detention. But it was later proved that the luxurious mansions Guo said belonged to Ling Jihua and Li Yuanchao were not owned by either Ling’s or Li’s family. Ling Jihua had been Guo Wengui’s political patron for many years. A few years ago, it was with Ling Jihua’s behind-the-scenes assistance that the then deputy mayor of Beijing, Liu Zhihua, was removed from his post, which allowed Guo Wengui to gain the land at for his company’s headquarters building at Pangu Plaza.

A Boxun reporter learned that Zheng Quan Securities has encountered financial trouble. Guo is wanted in China and is suspected of being involved in espionage in the U.S., collecting information for China’s Ministry of National Security.

Boxun’s information is based on an interview with the company hired by Guo to hack Boxun’s computers. The company refused after discovering Guo had misled it.
