On November 28, 2014, democracy activist Zhao Fengsheng from Hengyang City, Hunan Province was sentenced by the Hengyang Intermediate People’s Court to four years in prison for the crime of inciting subversion of state power, with deprivation of political rights for three years. Recently, a Boxun reporter obtained a copy of Zhao Fengsheng’s court judgment. The reason for the judgment was “An Open Letter to the Leaders of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement,” which was posted on Boxun’s website on November 26, 2013.

湖南赵枫生涉嫌“煽动颠覆国家政权”案将在11月28日宣判

The  judgment states that several netizens responded online to Zhao’s Open Letter. Based on this, the court determined that Zhao used the letter to incite subversion of state power and the socialist system through violence and terrorist attack.

Chinese authorities blame the East Turkestan Islamic Movement for the knife and bomb attack that killed three and injured 79 in April. Zhao’s Open Letter suggested that Zhongnanhai, the central Beijing compound housing top government offices, would be a better target.
