Residents of “cancer village” protest air, water pollution

Youlian Village, Dongsheng Temple, Wulate Banner, Bayanzhouer City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region: Due to polluted water and air caused by Eastern Mining Corporation –  500 times the allowable limit –  more than 20 people have contracted cancer in the past two years. Many livestock have also died.

On Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, dozens of police officers confronted protesting villagers at Eastern Mining. Protests had been going on for a week. Three people were injured and had to be hospitalized. Five were arrested. Villagers said among those arrested were three senior citizens who were released that evening and two younger villagers who were still in custody.
