Zhaodong City, Heilongjiang Province: On Friday,Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, more than 1,000 teachers gathered at the municipal government headquarters to protest low salaries, missing payments to their pension funds and a lack of subsidies for teachers in remote villages. Salaries are ¥400 less than in surrounding county towns.
After the protest on Nov. 16, the Zhaodong government fired an elementary school Communist Party secretary and warned, “If teachers continue to protest they will all be expelled. All further protests will be considered public disturbances and dealt with severely.”
In response, 8,000 elementary and middle school teachers from Zhaodong City and surrounding rural areas went on strike on Monday, Nov. 17. They carried a banner saying: “Return teachers’ salaries, return teachers’ respect.” They demanded an increase in salary, payment into the pension funds and the reinstatement of the elementary school Party secretary,
