Nashou Village, Wushi Township, Leizhou City, Guangdong Province: After developers and local government confiscated 589 mu of land to build a coal-fired power plant, villagers began protesting. On the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, hundreds of villagers blocked traffic and carried banners that read: “Return my land, return my justice.”

Two villagers were arrested. In response, protesters seized an excavator and other construction equipment and demanded that the government release the detained villagers. As of that evening the villagers still hadn’t been released.

A local villager said: “The scene included villagers from three villages, more than 10,000 protesters altogether. The scene had hundreds of police, dozens of police vehicles. The situation kept escalating. The clash between the police and villagers was fierce. The villagers now control the confiscated construction equipment. They’re waiting to exchange the equipment for their fellow villagers.
