Peasants demanding compensation beaten by riot police

In Lingshi County, Puzhong City, Shanxi Province, contractor Malu Group owes its workers more than a month’s salary. The workers went to the county government several times to demand payment but got no response. So on Tuesday October 28, 2014, approximately 200 workers went to the city government hoping that the officials there would help them collect their back wages. But instead they were met by the Petitions Bureau Chief Zhan Weihong and a large number of riot police. The peasants were chased and beaten an masse, some so badly that they had to be hospitalized.

They went to the county government four times to resolve their salary dispute but the government didn’t help. Petition Bureau Chief Zhan Weihong led the riot police in violently attacking the petitioners.
