Villagers seize and burn to death five construction workers

Pucheng Township, Puding County, Kunming City, Yunnan Province: On Tuesday, Oct. 14, angry villagers protesting land confiscation seized eight construction workers and burned to death five of them while their hands and feet were bound. The workers broke ground that day on the Pucheng Fanya Industrial Products Business and Trade Materials Distribution Center project, which villagers have been protesting for two years. 
At the construction site, villagers battled hundreds of uniformed police. Tear gas, riot police shields and a large amount of other police equipment was captured by the villagers.

Villager Shu Huanzhang died at approximately 4 p.m. At around 6 p.m. Zhang Sheng died. The injured and dead surpass that of the October 22, 2013 Guangji Incident. The conflict started when the Yunnan government seizedg more than 3000 mu of the village’s fields to build an automotive parts market. They only paid for 2000 mu. The real estate developers buried irrigation canals and ditches, waterlogging the village’s fields.

On October 22, 2013 in Guangji Village, also in Pucheng Township, there was also a sharp conflict due to land confiscation. Fifteen police and officials were taken into custody by villagers, more than 30 police and official vehicles were destroyed, and more than 70 people on both sides were injured.

The official China News Service Tuesday October 14, 2014 cited the Puding County, Kunming City Communist Party Committee propaganda bureau as saying: This county’s Pucheng Fanya Industrial Products Business and Trade Materials Distribution Center started construction today. The construction workers had a conflict with a portion of the wealthy village’s farmers. An initial investigation revealed that four were killed and more than 10 injured.
