The government in Liantang Village, Jinping District, Shantou City, Guangdong Province privately sold land and kept the illegal income. Villagers have been protesting this action for two years with no result. During this time they have marched and demonstrated many times. On the afternoon of Frida,y September 26, 2014, villagers again demonstrated. Approximately 3000 villagers marched with the banner: “Return my clean mountain and fertile land.” When they arrived at the government headquarters to sit in protest, because no government officials came out, the villagers pushed inside the compound and ransacked the office building.

This continued until noon, when the villagers were met by approximately 500 police using tear gas canisters and police truncheons. Some villagers were beaten and hospitalized and many were arrested. More arrests were made that evening.
