More than 10,000 people demonstrate against a large thermal-electric plant

In Pingjiang County, Yueyang City, Hunan Province more than 10,000 people demonstrated and called on the government to shut down the large local thermal power plant that burns 2,512,000 tons of coal a year. On the morning of September 18, more than 1,000 people started a protest in Pingjiang County, displaying a banner saying: “death by poisoning is worse than starving to death.” They marched, sat-in, hunger striked, and protested the local Huadian Group large thermal power plant. They continued until tonight, and many citizens participated. They marched to the city government and sat-in. Participants reported that more than 10,000 people participated.

On the same day, Shenzhen in Guangdong Province also had a group of Pingjiang people march in support.

Pingjiang built a power plant next to the Miluo River with a capacity of 4x1000MW, annual coal consumption of 2,512,000 tons, and daily coal consumption of 68,800 tons. Residents said that Pingjiang is a mountainous county and the mountain valleys and basins cause pollutants to spread. Any problem could have massive effects, causing contamination of a whole area. After the power plant was built, it discharged 14,712-36,546 tons through the smoke stack, 75,252-103,522 tons oxidized sulfur, and 100,028-237,350 tons of nitrous oxide that turn into acid fog and acid rain and seriously pollutes the surrounding environment.
