(Maoming, Guangdong) Protesters want the site of a proposed paraxylene plant moved out of the city’s downtown core and located beyond the city center’s 100-kilometer radius.

Eight people were allegedly killed and at least 83 seriously wounded during clashes between protesters and police on Sunday (March 30) as thousands of residents in Maoming, Guangdong demonstrated against the project, according to a post uploaded by netizens based in Maoming.

On Sunday, police started to arrest and attack protesters. Angered residents began to overturn police cars. The government called the protesters “thugs.” Police fired tear gas and used water cannons on the crowds.

Residents posted pictures and comments to Weibo, but most of them were deleted quickly.

In China, government has rarely responded favorably to protests. Most end in blood. The reason for many of the proests is corruption. Officials steal a huge amount of money. Recently, 90 billion Yuan (about 12 billion dollars) was confiscated from Zhou Yongkang and his family members. People cannot imagine the magnitude of corruption in China.
